The Federal Street Upgrade was an iconic project comprising the complete demolition of the existing street and main entrances to all restaurants, hotels and the Sky Tower. The project was delivered in a way that enabled Sky Tower, Sky City and all other businesses to continue their operations as normal, even to the extent of enabling community events like the ‘Fire Fighter Sky Tower Climb’ to continue as planned.
The project, although reasonably complex with the interfacing of existing buildings and infrastructure, ran very smoothly due to the high calibre Project Manager, the client Auckland Council, other consultant teams, and excellent contractor. Having early contractor involvement with the project team was paramount to that success. The overall project was completed successfully within the proposed budget and timeline.
Thorough investigation, utility operator and Council liaison work carried out during the concept and preliminary design stages enabled the final documentation to be fully detailed – resulting in minimum variations and work being carried out by several construction teams simultaneously without delays.
