Auckland’s City Centre Masterplan is a high-level, non-statutory document that supports the Auckland Plan 2050 and Auckland Unitary Plan. Together with the Waitematā Local Board Plan, these documents provide the overall vision that sets the direction for Auckland’s city centre. The City Centre Masterplan refresh presents a vision of a city centre that is:
• More family-friendly
• More pedestrian-friendly
• More environmentally friendly.
The Queen Street Tactical Urbanism Project, led by the Auckland Design Office with support from Auckland Transport, aims to address these objectives through quick and cost-effective, ‘light-touch’ measures of Urban Design and Engineering.
Envivo worked alongside Urban Designer LandLAB, and in close consultation with contractor JFC for the surveying, civil and structural engineering design and construction monitoring services to support the temporary tactical urbanism improvement works to provide for improved pedestrian experience and passage, whilst maintaining traffic flows and stormwater overland flow.
The project involved considerable collaboration with the vast number of stakeholders – particularly Auckland City business owners – and on the whole conflicts have been dealt with swiftly as they have arisen through the course of the project. Everchanging design requirements and parameters have been a key challenge in the project, as a result of keeping all stakeholders content and constructing the scheme in a live environment.
